Turning point in submarine war

Admiral Karl Dönitz |
The campaign by German U-boats against allied ship convoys in the Atlantic and on the world’s other oceans has become a major threat. Since the beginning of the war the „grey wolves“ have been able to sink hundreds of thousands of nautical tons. Valuable replenishment supplies have been lost.
In May of 1943 the Allies move out for a counter strike: With the help of radar the U-boats can now be located even at night and under inhospitable weather conditions as targets for destruction. The number of submarines lost climbs so rapidly that Admiral Karl Dönitz is compelled on 24 May 1943 to interrupt for a time the campaign against convoys in the North Atlantic.
